Lake Cumberland Kennel Club and Love on a Leash will offer testing for new therapy dogs and Canine Good Citizen (CGC) on Saturday morning, Aug. 20, at 10 a.m. at the Hal Rogers Fire Training Center, 180 Oak Leaf Lane in Somerset.
Cats are eligible to become therapy pets also and just need a recommendation from their veterinarian.
Professional trainer and approved American Kennel Club evaluator Dan O’Leary from Lexington will do the dog testing.
O’Leary owns Best Behavior Dog Training in Lexington and has been a trainer at both Pet Suites and PetSmart. He has come to Somerset twice previously to offer his services to the community.
Love on a Leash’s Obedience and Control Eva-luation consists of basic com-mands and temperament testing; a copy of the test can be found at the group’s national Web site www.loveonaleash.org
All dogs should be 1 year old, in good health and should have no history of aggression with either other animals or people. Dogs will only be tested in a flat collar and leash, or a slip lead; no training collars allowed.
The Canine Good Citizen test, or CGC, is comprised of 10 parts, some basic obedi-ence and some temperament, and can be reviewed on the American Kennel Club’s Web site: www.akc.org
Dogs tested for CGC should be attired in buckle or slip collar. Owners should bring the dog’s comb or brush for a handling exercise.
There is no charge to be evaluated for Love on a Leash. Canine Good Citizen fee will be $10 for those who pass to assist with the cost of paperwork and travel for the evaluator.
Dog lovers are welcome to come observe the testing or to participate as a practice session free of charge. Pre-registration is not required, but appreciated.
