Bess Hines, 97, passed away Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009 in Wichita Falls.
Bess was born on Nov. 27, 1911, in Evona, Ky., to the late Monroe and Linda Jane Pittman. She was a graduate of Berea College, Berea, Ky. She worked her way through college in the mid 30's as an assistant home economist in the Appalachian Mountains in Eastern Kentucky. She traveled from home to home on foot, by horse drawn carriage and occasionally by automobile. On Feb. 21, 1942, she married Lloyd Hines. Lloyd preceded her in death in 2007. Bess was a teacher in Pulaski County, Ky., for 31 years. For two of those years, she taught all eight grades in a one room school. Lloyd and Bess lived in Nancy, Ky., where they had a dairy farm, and later, they moved to Wichita Falls in 1993. Bess was very active in the church, teaching Sunday School and Bible School. She especially enjoyed the children, most of whom she had as students in elementary school. She was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church where she enjoyed all the fellowship, especially the quilting group.
She is survived by one daughter, Lynda Swenson and husband, Gary, Wichita Falls; two granddaughters, Kristin Lee Swenson and husband David, San Rafael, Calif., and Tamara Holt and husband Jeremy, Middletown, Dela.; three great-grandchildren, Benjamin Lee Swenson, Sarah Holt and Emma Holt; two brothers, Joe Pittman and Raymond Pittman; four sisters, Nellie Roy, Gladys Mounce, Ruth Turner and Edith Jasper, all of whom reside in Kentucky; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5 at St. Marks United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charlie Pierce officiating.
Interment will follow at Crestview Memorial Park under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Owens & Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls.
