Bertha Helton

obituaries

Bertha Helton, 92, formerly of the Sloans Valley community of Pulaski County, Ky., passed away on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, at the Somerset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born on Sept. 30, 1917, in Wayne County, Ky., she was the daughter of James and Ellen Choate. She was a homemaker and member of the Sloans Valley Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years. Mrs. Helton loved crafts, quilting, and her family.

Mrs. Helton is survived by two sons, David M. (and Sue) Helton of Somerset, Ky., and Darrell “D.D.” Dwight (and Betty) Helton of Danville, Ky.; ten grandchildren, Robin (and Dale) Prather, Kathy (and Bill) Wright, Amanda Rochelle (and Bro. Steve) Meece, Melissa (and Scott) Stevens, Lisa Gail (and Randy) Thompson, David M. (and Charlotte) Helton Jr., Arnold D. (and Holly) Helton II, Wendy Rae (and Gary) Allen, Phillip D. Helton, and Mindy Renee (and Adam) Johnson; 27 great grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Vivian Helton of Ferguson, Ky.

Preceding her in death were her parents, James and Ellen Choate; husband, Oakford M. Helton, to whom she was married on Feb. 17, 1934, in Somerset by the late John Sherman Cooper; a son, Arnold D. Helton; a brother, Riley Choate; two sisters, Laura E. Tyree and Frances Page; a grandson, Darrell Dwight Helton Jr.; and a great grandson, Bradley Stevens.

Visitation will be today, Dec. 19, from 6-9 p.m. at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home, 1046 West Hwy. 80, Somerset.

A funeral service will be Sunday, Dec. 20, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Steve Meece officiating.

Burial will be in the Sloans Valley Cemetery.

The family requests expressions of sympathy be made to the Sloans Valley Cemetery Fund, c/o David Helton, 81 Jewell Street, Somerset, Ky., 42501.
