Leonard Whitis

obituaries

Leonard Whitis, 81, of Hinkle Road in Eubank, Ky., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

He was born in Eubank on June 30, 1928, son of the late Garfield and Lillian Lowe Whitis. He was self employed as a builder in construction, and a member of McKinney Baptist Church. He was a Korean War U.S. Army veteran. He was also a farmer and enjoyed his cattle, bowling, ball playing, deer hunting and serving in his church.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Hamilton Whitis, whom he married on Dec. 25, 1956; three sons, Steve (and Charlotte) Smith of Clarksville, Tenn., Garlen (and Paula) Whitis of Eubank, and Greg (and Charity) Whitis of Whitley City, Ky.; two daughters, Linda (and Warren) Berry of Mt. Vernon, Ky., and Gail (and James) Wheat of Berea, Ky.; four sisters, Marie Dove of Radcliff, Ky., Maxine (and Van) French and Rose (and Bill) Estep, both of Somerset, and Maudine Glass, who passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009; a brother-in-law, James Glass of Flomaton, Ala.; 12 grandchildren, Philip (and Stephanie) Berry, Christy Smith, Michael Smith, Shawn Smith, Evan, Hannah and Emma Whitis, Jamie, Maranda and Sam Wheat, and Eldon and Emily Whitis; and two great-grandchildren, Josh Haught and Danyelle Haught.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild, Matthew Garrett Wheat.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home with Bro. John Helton and Bro. Barry Vaught officiating.

Burial will be in Pisgah Cemetery with services by Bro. Anson Perkins and military honors by American Legion Post #38.

Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today, Dec. 18, at the funeral home.

Donations may be made to the Gideon Memorial Bible Plan.
