James "Gene" Eugene McGowan, age 75 of Somerset, Ky., departed this life on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.
He was born on Sept. 8, 1937 in Russell County, Ky. to the late Wesley and Dona Stevens McGowan. Mr. McGowan was formerly a welder for Somerset Machine Shop.
He is survived by his wife, Jolene Adkins McGowan, whom he married on July 12, 1965 in Jamestown, Tenn.; four sons, James N. McGowan, Chester L. (and Kim) McGowan, Marty (and Tina) McGowan and Wayne Spears, all of Somerset, Ky.; five grandchildren, Ryan McGowan of Louisville, Ky., Kendra and Joshua McGowan of Somerset, Ky., Ashley (and Kyle) Rice of Somerset, Ky. and Holly Wilson; four great-grandchildren, Ashton Lee Hunt of Monticello, Ky., Baylee Rose Triplett of Florence, Ky., Fury Sidwell of Somerset, Ky. and Cooper Patterson of Somerset, Ky.; three brothers, Chester L. and Leonard R. McGowan, both of Ohio, and Leon McGowan of Russell County, Ky.; four sisters, Jeanette McGee of Ohio, Lena Wright of Russell County, Ky., and Zella Wilson and Adelene Keith, both of Somerset, Ky.; and multiple nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, J. W. McGowan; and four sisters, Clara Hatfield, Hester Evans, Roberta Grossman and Fern Shepherd.
Visitation will be Saturday, February 16, 2013 after 6 p.m. at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home, 1046 West Highway 80, Somerset, Ky.
His funeral service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Brother Johnny Dunbar officiating.
Burial will be in the Sunshine Cemetery in Russell County, Ky.
