Beldy Lee Massey, 80, husband of Mary Ann Massey (recently deceased) of Longwood, Fla. and formerly of Somerset, Ky., departed this life on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012. He had just recently returned to his beloved Kentucky home and family.
Beldy was born in Somerset, Ky. on Dec. 7, 1931, to Edith (Butt) Massey and Hollie Clarence Massey. Beldy was of the Christian faith, a United States Veteran, and a legendary basketball player and coach. He married Mary Ann (Williams) Wright, his high school sweetheart, in 1978 and they resided in Florida for 34 years. They enjoyed spending time with their family and friends and cheering for the Kentucky Wildcats. Coach Massey was inducted into the Somerset Hall of Fame and still holds the record for a high of 51 points scored in a single game. He coached at Eubank High School, Riverside Military Academy in Georgia and in Florida. He became the owner of Lee’s Halftime, a popular gathering place for Kentucky Wildcat fans in Longwood, Fla. until his retirement.
Beldy is survived by his son Beldy Lee Massey Jr.; grandson Zachery Massey; and brother Jimmy Massey (Glenda).
Preceding him in death were his wife, Mary Ann; his parents; one brother, Gerald Massey; and one sister, Elsie Massey Marcum.
After his marriage to Mary Ann, Beldy also had three step-children, Sandra Wright Carnley (Rodney), J. Warren Wright II (Laura Bowen) and John Williams Wright (deceased).
He was “granddaddy” to Kara and Ryan Carnley and Brittany Wright.
Funeral services will be held at Somerset Undertaking on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at 11 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor Gary Haist will be officiating.
Interment will be in the Somerset Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to honor Beldy’s life may be given to The Central Florida UK Club addressed to: Sandra Carnley, Bell Shoals Baptist Academy, 2102 Bell Shoals Road, Brandon, Fla., 33511.
