Virginia Huffaker Murrell, 98, passed away on February 19, 2012.
She was born on January 10, 1914, in Somerset, Ky., the daughter of the late Pearl Huffaker Murrell and Edgar Murrell.
Ms. Murrell graduated from the University of Kentucky, where she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority and served as chapter president. She received her Master's Degree in Music Education from Columbia University and did further graduate work at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She spent her professional teaching career in Bellevue, Ky., where she taught music, directed the choral program and was music supervisor for the school district for over 35 years.
In addition to her teaching career, she served in many leadership positions in the educational field. For many years, she served as chair of the Board of Trustees for the Kentucky Teacher Retirement System. She was president of the Kentucky Education Association and served on the Board of National Education Association. Ms. Murrell was state president of the women's education honorary Delta Kappa Gamma and served in leadership positions at the national level of this organization. In 2008, she was inducted into the Delta Kappa Gamma Hall of Fame. She served as president of the Kentucky Music Educators Association. The Kentucky PTA awarded Ms. Murrell a lifetime membership in honor of her service to education in Northern Kentucky. Locally, Ms. Murrell had been very involved with Lake Cumberland Performing Arts and the Chautauqua Circle. She was a charter member of the Somerset
chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was a lifelong member of First Christian Church. Her entire life was devoted to education and music.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Murrell.
Funeral services will be at Somerset Undertaking Company today at 11 with Rev. Joseph K. Altman officiating.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m.
Burial will follow at Somerset Cemetery.
