Chamber of Commerce banquet to be held Jan. 17

New president for 2013 will be installed

Members and guests of Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce will gather at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, January 17 to celebrate accomplishments of the business community during 2012.

The event at The Center for Rural Development is the cham-ber’s annual installation banquet, historically a place to be and be seen. Last year’s banquet attracted nearly 700 attendees and was the largest such event in the history of the storied chamber of commerce.

During the upcoming banquet Leah Taylor, president of Cumberland Lake Shell, will be installed as 2013 president of the chamber. She will succeed Doug Parkey of Citizens Bank.

Also installed will be five new members of the chamber’s board of directors: Seth Atwell, of Evans, Harville, Atwell & Company; Elsa Brown, of Bondtech Corporation; Cindy Clouse, of Somerset Community College; Bill Newell, of Ready-Mix Concrete; and Brook Ping, of Stonebrook Development LLC. Chris Girdler, recently elected state senator, will be elevated to first vice president of the chamber and Megan Damron, of BB&T Bank, will be installed as second vice president.

Ten businesses, categorized by number of employees, will be honored along with several individuals and groups. A Distinguished Community Service Award will be presented to denote outstanding contributions to the business community.

“Our growth as an organization during the past year has been phenomenal,” said Bobby Clue, executive director of the chamber. With approximately 550 members, the local chamber is the eighth largest chamber of commerce in Kentucky, said Clue. “And, based on the fact we are in a county with only 65,000 people, nobody can do what we do,” he added.

“Our chamber board is comprised of individuals who represent diverse industries in Pulaski County,” Clue continued. “These business leaders assist the chamber with its mission to help members through legislative advocacy, economic development, education, savings, networking and increased visibility.”

The chamber’s membership meetings are the first Tuesday of each month. The event attracts an average attendance of around 200 and ballooned to 320 to greet Congressman Hal Rogers and Senator Mitch McConnell.

42 tons of stolen fertilizer tracked to Pulaski
The Pulaski County economy has benefited greatly over the years from the so-called “Ohio Navy” visiting Lake Cumberland every summer. Less welcome would be a visit of 42 tons of fertilizer from the Buckeye State.

Mayor anticipates tussle over additional liquor licenses

Relay for Life event raises $137,000 to fight cancer
