New bike trail should be open next week

Somerset —  

A five-mile trail designed to meet standards of the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) should be complete at Pulaski County Park by next week, according to Tiffany Bourne, community development director for Pulaski County.
“Called Eagle Scout Trail, it should draw (hundreds) of mountain bikers to the park. Mountain bikers are always looking for new trails to ride,” she said.
  IMBA is a non-profit educational association with a mission to create, enhance and preserve great mountain biking experiences. 
  The association’s worldwide network includes 35,000 individual members, more than 750 bicycle clubs, more than 200 corporate partners and about 600 retail shops. Association members live in all 50 states, most Canadian provinces and in 30 other countries. IMBA's headquarters in the United States are located in Boulder, Colorado.
A four-year project, the trail at Pulaski County Park was constructed with a $50,000 grant from Kentucky’s Recreational Trails Program, funded by the Federal Highway Administration, and with in-kind assistance from Pedal The Planet, a Lexington-based bicycles sales and service.
  The Recreational Trails Program can provide or maintain recreational trails and trailhead facilities for both motorized and non-motorized use. The trail at Pulaski County Park is designed for non-motorized use, trail runners and hiking.
“We will have a grand opening in the spring,” said Bourne. The timing will be less than a year before rehabilitation of Wolf Creek Dam will be complete and the waters of Lake Cumberland will again surround beautiful Pulaski County Park.

    With dwindling numbers at the facility on Bourne Avenue, the Pulaski County School District has decided to transition any students using its services to similar programs at either Southwestern or Pulaski County High Schools.
