Fires south of Somerset deemed ‘suspicious’

Somerset —

Local officials are investigating what appears to be a string of suspicious blazes at vacant homes south of Somerset.
“It kind of comes in rashes,” said Fire Chief Barry Morrow, with the Ferguson Volunteer Fire Department.
Morrow said his department responded to three fires at vacant homes in the past week or so — two of those on the same day. Those fires are just the latest in a string of fires that have popped up in the Bend of the Lakes area south of Somerset off S. Ky. 1247, specifically on Smith Drive, Sierra Drive, Samara Drive and others.
Morrow said the Somerset Fire Investigation Team has been called in.
The latest three blazes are just the last in a long line of fires that have occurred in the last year or so, and Morrow said none of the homes that caught fire had electricity hooked up to them.
Pulaski County Public Safety Director Tiger Robinson said fires are automatically labeled “suspicious” when they occur in vacant homes “because somebody had to be there to set it.”
Anyone with information on the fires can contact the Somerset Fire Investigation Team at 679-1163 or the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department at 678-5145.
