Local man charged in alleged murder-for-hire scheme

Somerset —  

An assault in McCreary County Thursday led to the arrest of a Somerset resident in an alleged murder-for-hire plot.
Trooper Don Trosper of the Kentucky State Police said Timothy Prater, 30, of Somerset, was arrested on Friday and charged with criminal conspiracy to commit murder; impersonating a peace officer; first-degree robbery; and unlawful imprisonment.
Trosper said state police received a report of an assault at a residence on Richard Stephens Road in the Pine Knot Community of McCreary County early Thursday morning.
“KSP officers determined a female victim was walking from her home to her vehicle when she was assaulted by three men dressed in dark clothing,” Trosper said. “ Neighbors of the victim noticed a strange vehicle parked close to her home and went to check on her.
“The three men identified themselves as FBI agents to the neighbors but refused to show any identification,” Trosper added. “The neighbors refused to leave the victim with the three men causing the men to leave the scene.”
Reports said Prater told police on Friday he was paid $1,500 to kill the woman he was attacking.
Trosper said the motive for the attack is still under investigation and additional arrests are expected.
KSP Det. Billy Correll is continuing the investigation and was assisted at the scene by officers from the Kentucky State Police and the McCreary County Sheriffs Department.
