Teen charged in alleged murder plot violated parole

A teenager accused of trying to kill a friend’s parents last week has also been charged for violating his parole on a separate case.

Paul Scott Young, 18, of Spring View Drive, Somerset, was charged on a Pulaski Circuit Court bench arrest warrant Sunday for violation of pretrial diversion.

Young has been lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center since early Wednesday morning (Jan. 16), after he allegedly tried to stab a 17-year-old friend’s father in his bedroom.

Young pleaded not guilty to two counts of attempted murder in court on Friday.

The victim, Edwin D. Phelps, 43, suffered from several knife wounds to the neck and face area and he was taken to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital for treatment, and from there he was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Police responding to the scene — located in Phelps’ bedroom he shares with his wife, Laura E. Phelps, 44, said they soon discovered that Young had been asked by the couple’s 17-year-old son and Young’s friend to kill them.

The juvenile, who has not been named because he has yet to be charged as an adult, allegedly let Young into their home while Edwin and Laura Phelps were sleeping.

Young allegedly went into Phelps’ bedroom and attacked Edwin Phelps “in an attempt to carry out the murder plot,” according to Lt. Det. Brett Whitaker, with the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department.

Whitaker said Phelps was able to subdue Young and hold him in a headlock until help arrived despite suffering from serious knife wounds.

Laura Phelps was uninjured in the incident.

“(Edwin Phelps’) actions in overpowering and subduing (Young) stopped the attack and prevented (Young) from carrying out the murder plot and prevented further injury to himself and his wife,” said Whitaker.

Edwin Phelps has been released from the hospital.

Edwin and Laura Phelps’ 17-year-old son was arrested as well and charged with two counts of criminal solicitation to murder.

Young’s preliminary hearing in the attempted murder case is set for tomorrow (Jan. 23).

Young is now facing prison time for violating his pretrial diversion, which was based on an original (and separate from the attempted murder case) charge of third-degree burglary. A hearing for that case is set for sometime in February.
