Jumpers ride out contest against Thoroughbreds, 66-48

Somerset —

Somerset played Harrison County on Friday night at the Briar Patch in the first annual Lake Cumberland Hoops Classic. The Briar Jumpers defeated the Thoroughbreds 66-48.
“I thought we played really well, it was much better than last nights,” stated Coach Jeff Cothron. “Harrison is a good basketball team but tonight our effort was great and our intensity was great.”
Senior Ryan Weddle step up and played a staring role in this win for the jumpers scoring 21-points and shooting 100 percent from the charity strip.
In the first quarter Somerset shared the ball moving it around a lot allowing all five starters to get on the scoreboard in the first period of play. They were also able to force several turnovers with their aggressive defense. Somerset ended the first quarter with a four-point advantage 18-14.
In the second half the Jumpers kept attacking the Thoroughbreds on defense forcing 10 turnovers at the half. Somerset increased their lead to nine going into the break. The Jumpers went into the half on a 10-2 run.  The score was 33-24 at halftime.
“To hold Harrison County to only 48 points is great,” stated coach Cothron. “it just shows that we played hard and with intensity the whole game.”
In the third quarter the Jumpers didn’t slow down any as they worked to increase their lead by an even bigger margin. Somerset didn’t allow Harrison County to cut into their lead at all. The third quarter ended with the jumpers having a 10-point lead 45-35.
To start off the fourth quarter Somerset went on a 14-4 run including a three from junior Cam Cheuvront that started the run for the team early in the final period. The Jumpers won with only their starters making it into the scoring column. Somerset won by 18 with your final score being 66-48.
With the win over Harrison County the Briar Jumpers advance to the semi-finals of the Lake Cumberland Hoops Classic along with Southwestern, Pulaski and North Hardin.
Somerset returned to action on Saturday night where they took on the Southwestern Warriors at the Wigwam for a trip to the Lake Cumberland Hoops Classic championship game. With the win over the Thorobreds the Jumpers have advanced to 9-2 on the season.
“We aren’t going to change anything before we play the Warriors we are just going to try and do what we do best,” coach Cothron explained. “We are looking forward to the challenge of playing on their court.”

Signs and buoys are already in place at Wolf Creek Dam that restrict fishermen’s access within 500 feet above and below the structure.
Tom Hale, operations manager for Lake Cumberland, said already existing buoys and signs warning of hazardous waters have been replaced with new signage restricting entrance into prohibited areas. He said enforcement of the restrictions has not begun because the Corps is still in the implementation stage.
