Old medication drop box now available at SPD substation

—

A medication drop box — a place where you can safely throw away unused or expired medicine — is now available at Somerset Police Department’s substation.
The drop box is located at the Somerset Mall near the SPD substation at the main rear entrance.
Congressman Harold “Hal” Rogers, SPD Acting Police Chief Major Doug Nelson, and members of Operation UNITE and Somerset City Council were on hand for the dedication, held earlier this month.
“A medication drop box provides a safe place to dispose of any medication — from over-the-counter pills to strong pain medicine,” said SPD Lt. Shannon Smith in a press release.
According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, 29% of people age 12 and older who used drugs for the first time in 2009 began using a prescription drug non-medically.
“By dropping your unwanted or expired medications off at a secure drop box facility, you reduce your contribution to the drug problem,” Smith said through the press release. “It reduces the supply that a friend or family member might get their hands on to experiment with drugs, and reduces what a thief can take when if you become the victim of theft or burglary.”
The SPD mall substation is normally open between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
