Somerset — Southwestern should have just declared the Cordia game on Monday “Danay Fothergill Night.” She scored 19 points and was honored for her most recent accolade. Fothergill, a junior, became the seventh member of Southwestern’s prestigious 1,000 point club. She is the third member of her family to be named to the club. Her older brother Dustin and older sister Devin, each are members of 1,000 point club. She tallied the milestone in the Lady Warriors first game of the season on the road against Cumberland County. “We knew that when she came into the season, she only needed 16 points, and she got that in that first game of the season,” said Southwestern head coach Tim Rice. So, on Monday night, the junior guard was honored in the Lady Warriors home opener against a winless Lady Lion squad.
Cordia limped into Monday night’s contest at the Wigwam with a 0-6 record. After 32 minutes of play, the Lady Lions were once again on the losing end. The Lady Warriors won 97-18 over Cordia in a lopsided game. No, that is not a typo, that was the actual score. A new school record was set with the most points scored in a game. The Lady Warriors fell just short of the century mark by three points.
The Lady Warriors controlled this game from the very get-go, scoring six seconds into the contest. After taking a 9-0 lead, Lady Warrior head coach Tim Rice took a timeout after witnessing sloppy play by his team. Whatever Rice said must have clicked because the Lady Warriors came out on fire. Destiny Molden got a steal and took it to the hole for two points and then Emily Walker busted a three to widen the Lady Warrior lead.
With one minute left in the opening quarter, Cordia’s T. Mullins hit a jump shot to give the Lady Lions their first basket of the contest. With :34 left, Mullins hit another shot. At the end of the first, Southwestern led 30 to 4 over Mullins and the rest of the Lady Lions. Fothergill scored 13 of her 19 points in opening quarter.
The second quarter belonged to Southwestern’s Jessica Pierce and Adison Corder. Corder matched Fothergill’s first quarter performance, tallying 13 points in the second. Pierce chipped in with nine points. At the break, the Lady Warriors led 61-9.
In the second half, Rice set up a substitution system consisting of three, five player squads that would sub in every three minutes. All 15 players on the Lady Warriors roster played big-time minutes.
“We got everyone on the team eight to ten minutes of playing time, that was really good,” said the Southwestern head coach. “A lot of the younger girls got their first time varsity experience or first extended varsity experience.”
Out of the 15 players, 12 of them put points on the board for Southwestern. All five starters reached double figures, scoring 70 of the team’s 97 points.
Fothergill led the way for the Southwestern with 19 points. Seventh-grader Adison Corder finished with 18 points.
“I didn’t think we played that well, it’s hard to play well in a game when your heavily over matched against a team,” stated Rice.
With the win, the Lady Warriors moved to 4-1 on the season and won’t return to action until Friday night. Southwestern will travel to John Hardin High School for the John Hardin Christmas Classic.
The Lady Warriors will open tournament play against Campbellsville on Friday, Dec. 18, and will play Magoffin and Bath County on Saturday, Dec. 19.

Last Saturday, the Lady Warriors traveled to McCreary Central High School for the Southern Kentucky Shootout.

“We (Southwestern) shot the ball great, especially from 3 point range,” said Lady Warrior head coach Tim Rice. “Especially Danay Fothergill, obtaining her third 30-point game of the season.”
Adison Corder dished out five assists and Jessica Pierce had ten rebounds.
“Jessica Pierce had a great game on the boards and recorded her second double-double of the season,” continued Rice. “Our young team is improving each game and seem to be having a lot of fun”
