Somerset — What a phenomenal season for both the boys and girls basketball teams at Southern Middle School.
The Warriors not only had one, but two Final Four finishes in the Middle School State Tournaments in Lexington, Ky, at the Kentucky Basketball Academy this year.
The Lady Warriors seven-grade team finished with an overall record of 24-2. They also won the Whitley County Shootout, were runners-up in the Middle School 12th Region Tournament, and finished in the Final Four in the Middle School State Tournament.
The eighth-grade Lady Warriors finished with an overall record of 24-1 and won the Middle School 12th Region Tournament. Both Lady Warriors teams were honored back in November with a certified letter from Jeff Hoover, Minority Floor Leader House of Representatives, for all of their accomplishments and hard work over the past season.
The Warriors seventh-grade boys’ basketball team finished with an overall record of 20-6 this season. They also won the Northern Christmas Tournament, finished in the Elite Eight out of 56 teams in the Middle School State Tournament, and had two impressive wins over defending state champs, Wayne County Cardinals, who were undefeated at the time when the Warriors beat them the first time.
The eighth-grade Warriors finished with an overall record of 32-6 and they also won the McCreary County Tourney, Campbellsville Invitational, Lexington Christian Shootout and finished in the Final Four out of 64 teams in the Middle School State Tournament.
