Somerset — The Somerset Christian Cougar boys’ basketball team closed out the 2009-2010 season on a positive note. The Cougars recorded wins against Glasgow Christian and Winchester Christian, while dropping a contest to Fox Creek Christian from Lawrenceburg.
In Somerset’s 63-39 victory over Glasgow, the Cougars were paced by Jakob Maybrier’s 32 points. Senior Max Pilacsynski chipped in with 16.
The Cougars finished the regular season with a 60-57 loss to Fox Creek. In a game that saw multiple ties and lead changes, it was the Indians that held off the scrappy Cougars for a thrilling win. Somerset had two scoring opportunities as time expired, but could not find the net in their bid to tie the game. Pilacsynski led SCS with 22, while Justin Ricks had 15 and Maybrier finished with 10. Junior Jeremy Hart and freshman Thomas Wier each contributed five points.
Somerset opened play in the KCAA Region 4 Tournament with a home game against Winchester Christian. The previous match-up was an entertaining affair, as the Cougars won 80-79 in an overtime thriller. This time was a completely different story, as Somerset dominated the visitors. The final score of 72-59 was a bit misleading, as the Cougars held a 16-2 lead after one period of play, and a 47-14 advantage at halftime. All 10 players got in the scoring column with Maybrier leading the way with 20 points in limited action. Ricks had 13, while Christian Strack and Jacob Troxtell each chipped in with 8.
Somerset advanced to the semifinals with the victory, where the top-seeded Eagles from Bluegrass Baptist were awaiting. The Eagles had dismantled the Cougars in their first two meetings by a combined count of 76 points (97-67 and 96-50).
The Cougars came out of the gate swinging, racing out to an early 8-0 lead. Bluegrass regained their composure and finished the first quarter on a 12-2 run, grabbing the 12-10 lead. The Eagles maintained that lead and extended it to five at the intermission, 32-27. Hart attempted to keep his ball team close in the third frame, scoring all six of his points in the quarter. Unfortunately for the Cougars, their upset bid fell short as the Eagles hit their free throws down the stretch to preserve a 66-50 victory.
Maybrier led Somerset with 18, while Ricks recorded 14. Hart and Troxtell each had 6, and Pilacsynski chipped in with 4 in his final game for the Cougars.
Somerset Christian School finished the season with a 12-10 mark, a vast improvement from a year ago.
