After taking a look at the free-throw shooting statistics after last night’s Pulaski County-Southwestern game, it was very easy to see why the outcome was the way it was.
Southwestern missed three free-throws on the night, going 13 of 16 from the charity stripe for a percentage of 81. Visiting Pulaski, meanwhile, went 12 of 28 from the free-throw line for a percentage of 43.
The difference in free-throw shooting made a huge difference in last night's cross-town match-up, as the Southwestern Lady Warriors came away with a 59-51 victory over the Lady Maroons of Pulaski at the Wigwam.
“We didn’t shoot the ball extremely well overall,” began Lady Maroon coach Brian Miller. “We haven’t shot a lot of free-throws at practice lately. We’ve been plugging everyone in and out with different rotations, so we’ve got to get back to work.”
With the setback, the Lady Maroons fell to 9-13 on the year, and unfortunately for Pulaski, the loss was their eighth consecutive loss. However, those losses have had a lot to do with the numerous injuries and illnesses that have effected members on the Pulaski team.
For Southwestern, the victory allowed Tim Rice and company to move to 13-9 on the season and extend their winning streak over the Lady Maroons to four consecutive games. With the eight-point win, the Lady Warriors have now won 13 of the past 14 meetings against Pulaski.
Though it wasn’t the prettiest of games for the ‘Blue and Orange,’ Rice was glad to see his team leave the gym with the win, which was their third straight victory after wins against North Laurel on Saturday and West Jessamine on Monday evening.
“We got a win, but we didn’t play very well,” began Rice, who is in his ninth season at Southwestern. “We were doing a decent job defensively in the second half until we started fouling. For some reason we were fouling with a double-digit lead. We have got a few things that we need to work on, but that’s the reason why you play the game.”
Both squads traded baskets to kick-off the contest, as Southwestern sophomore Destiny Molden hit a three and Pulaski sophomore Eulah Perkins came up with back-to-back baskets. After Perkins’ pair of scores, the Lady Warriors would go on a 14-2 run to take a 17-9 first quarter lead.
Southwestern’s 14-2 run included a beginning span of eight unanswered points. Along with Molden, fellow sophomores Adison Corder and Dylana Fothergill chimed in on the run. Of the Lady Warriors’ 17 first period points, Molden tallied eight of them, paced by a pair of three-points.
Perkins and senior Brittany Warren combined to score all nine of the Lady Maroons’ first quarter points. Warren tallied five points, while Perkins scored four.
The Lady Maroons would outscore Southwestern in the second frame by a margin of 13-12. The score at the intermission would be, 29-22, in favor of the Lady Warriors.
Southwestern ran the table in the third stanza, as they outscored the Lady Maroons by a margin of 12-5. After three quarters of basketball action in the books, Southwestern went into the fourth and final frame with a 16-point, 41-27 lead over Pulaski.
Down by a margin of 16 points, one would think that a team would lay down and call it quits. Pulaski, however, would not, as they came back to cut the lead all the way down to six points late in the contest.
“Pulaski played hard,” Rice stated. “They never quit, they always play hard.”
In the fourth frame, the Lady Maroons outscored Southwestern, 24-18. But it just wasn’t enough, as the Lady Warriors came away with the eight-point victory.
The Lady Warriors were led by Corder, who tied for a game-high 20 points. The sophomore tallied nine of her 20 points in the final quarter. Three other Lady Warriors made it into double figures, as Molden tallied 12 points, while Brittany Combs and Fothergill both chimed in with ten points apiece.
Rebounding-wise, Southwestern was led by freshman Samantha Fitzgerald, who pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Fothergill and freshman Elisabeth Latham both had seven boards each.
Pulaski had one player reach double figures, which was Brittany Warren’s club-high 20 points.
Despite the loss, there were some bright spots for the Lady Maroons, particularly the comeback of senior Sarah Howard, who scored three points in her first action since breaking her foot in a December game against Monticello. Haley Warren is also expected to be back soon, so things are looking up for Miller and company.
With the injuries to Howard and Haley Warren, the Lady Maroons have had some youngsters step-up and play well. Last night, three players - Perkins, Taryn Davis, and Jeriah Privett - all had a nice showing for Pulaski. Perkins finished with five points and five rebounds, while Davis and Privett both came in during the fourth period and scored seven points each.
“Those kids are playing well - and we expect them to,” praised Miller. “They’ve had a good JV and freshman season. It’s one of those things where people go down and someone has got to step-up. Those kids have played a lot of valuable minutes, which will help us down the stretch when everyone gets healthy again.”
The Lady Maroons will hit the hardwood again on Friday evening, playing in another cross-town match-up, this time against 47th District rival Somerset at 7:30 p.m. at PC Gym. Look for the preview of that district showdown in Friday’s sports section.
Southwestern will return to action on Friday night as well, traveling north on Highway 27 to take against 12th Region opponent Garrard County.

Sammy Jo Bullock places 7th in nation
Shopville Elementary fifth-grader Sammy Jo Bullock fired a 284 in the National Archery in Schools National Championships to place seventh in the girls elementary division. Bullock, who peirced the center circle 16 times, was third n the nation among her fellow fifth-graders.

Pulaski downs Corbin on Senior Night
On Tuesday afternoon at PC Field, the Pulaski County Maroon baseball team bid farewell to Taylor Gover, Eric Jones, Dustin Vaught, Henry Lorman, Tyler Wesley, and Tyler Hail on senior night before Danny Masten’s club took on a Corbin team that had earned a shutout victory over PC earlier in the year.
On Tuesday however, it was the Maroons that would not be denied on senior night, and it was those seniors that lead the way for Masten and company.
Taylor Gover notched two doubles and drove in a career-best six RBI in the game, while fellow senior Henry Lorman hit the first homerun of his varsity career and drove in three more runs. -
Somerset seniors help down Warriors, 3-1
Prior to their cross-town match-up with Southwestern, Somerset seniors Parth Patel and Heath Ehrsam were honored for their years of hard work with Senior Night festivities.
Patel and Ehrsam continued to shine on their special night at the ballpark, as the pair of Briar Jumper seniors played a pivotal role in Somerset’s 3-1 victory over the Warriors last night at Charlie Taylor Field. -
Lady Jumpers turn Silver into Gold
When everything was calculated and the results came in at the Class A Region 6 Track & Field Championships at the University of the Cumberlands on Saturday, the girls team from Richmond Model had apparently won the region team title with 144 points — Somerset High School Lady Jumpers finishing a close second place with 143 points. The one-point loss would have put an end to the Lady Jumpers’ hopes of a fourth consecutive regional team title.
“It was really tough to swallow that we lost by a single point,” Somerset track coach Steve Wallace commented. “So many scenarios run through my mind on points lost in different events.” -
Fourman does it all
When the final out was made in last night’s cross-town meeting at the War Path, the scoreboard read “Southwestern 2, Somerset 0.”
However, the scoreboard could have read “Sydney Fourman 2, Somerset 0,” simply because the junior did it all for the Southwestern Lady Warriors.
In the two-run victory over the cross-town rival Lady Jumpers of Somerset, Fourman blasted a pair of home runs, which turned out to be Southwestern’s only two hits in the game. On the mound, the junior struck out nine batters in a seven-inning shutout performance. -
Briar Jumpers hold off Corbin, 3-2
To get past visiting Corbin, Somerset used “Team Logan” to get the job done.
Logan Ramsey and Logan Combs, both freshmen for the Briar Jumpers, played like veterans in Somerset’s meeting with Corbin on Friday evening at Charlie Taylor Field. With the stellar play from the pair of youngsters, the Briar Jumpers were able to sneak past the Corbin Redhounds by a score of 3-2. -
Pulaski boys win regional crown
At the conclusion of last year’s Class AAA Region 7 Championship, it was the Madison Central boys doing the celebrating after winning a regional title over Pulaski County.
In the 2013 edition of the Class AAA Region 7 Championship on Thursday evening at Southwestern High School, it was the other away around, as the Pulaski County boys team captured the regional title over Madison Central by a score of 191 to 171. Southwestern finished third with 51 points.
On the girls side once again, it was Madison Central coming away with a regional title, as they scored a meet-high 174.50 points. The Southwestern Lady Warriors came in second with 88 points, while the Pulaski County Lady Maroons finished in the third spot with 67 points. -
Somerset downs Lady Lakers, 8-5
Wednesday night's match-up against Russell County couldn’t have begun any worse for the Somerset Lady Jumpers. After making an error and hitting a batter to lead off the game, the Lady Jumpers looked as if they were in for a rough outing with the visiting Lady Lakers.
Despite giving up a pair of runs in the top half of the opening frame, David Dorsey’s club bounced back from the early two-run deficit to down Russell County by a final tally of 8-5. With the victory, Somerset avenged an earlier season loss to the Lady Lakers - Russell County won the first meeting, 8-7, that occurred on March 28th in Russell Springs. -
Lady Warriors blank Model, 10-0
Southwestern softball head coach Jim Woodall feels like his team his hitting their side at the right time of the year.
With the performance his Lady Warriors had in a six-inning, 10-0 win over Model on Tuesday evening at the War Path, most would probably agree with the veteran coach. -
Daniel Pitman signs with Lindsey Wilson
A few weeks ago Daniel Pitman, of Pulaski County, signed to play soccer with Lindsey Wilson.
Lindsey Wilson is very much a soccer school and they have a highly remarked team winning nine NAIA championships the most recent of those coming in 2011.
“This is something I have looked forward to my whole life,” began Pitman. “It has always been my dream to get to play soccer in college.” - More Local Sports Headlines
