My. Victory — Hundreds of cyclists took to the rural roads of the White Lily area on Saturday for the second running of the Mt. Victory Road Race.
And like in its first running, Dirk Pohlmann of Knoxville, Tenn. came away with the win in the 55-mile Category 1, 2 & 3 race. Pohlmann, of Texas Roadhouse racing, won the Mt. Victory title back in 2008.
Locally, Brad Johnson, of Cumberland Cycles racing team, picked up a third place finish in the 44-mile Category 3-4 race.
Also representing the Cumberland Cycles racing team, Jack Evans had a fourth place finish in the Masters division.
Cumberland Cycles racing team members Andrew Harrell and Kevin McKinney competed in the men’s 33-mile Category 4-5 race.
Science Hill resident Jennifer Denney, of Volo Sports, finished 12th in the 33-mile women’s race.
“This year’s race was a huge success,” stated race director Jonathon Thompson. “We had a lot of great volunteers who put in countless hours in making this road race a success.”
“The community of Mt. Victory has really embraced this event and they call it their own as much as the cyclists do,” Thompson said. “ A lot of the people in this area have told me they love to see the colorful packs of riders screaming down the roads, that rarely see traffic.”
Next year’s Mt. Victory Road Race will be expanded to a two-day omnium event featuring the long distance road race in the Mt.Victory area. Then later that same evening, the cyclists will compete in an 8-mile time trail on Barnesburg Road. The following day will feature a one-hour short circuit criterium through downtown Somerset.
