Somerset —
Another game at the Wigwam and another impressive win by the Southwestern High School Lady Warriors, after they trounced the West Jessamine High School Lady Colts 67-45 on Monday night.
These impressive victories keep piling up on a young group of girls from Southwestern, who many feared may struggle this season after the loss of the program’s all-time scorer Danay Fothergill.
“This group of girls have really come along a lot faster than I thought they would, Lady Warrior head coach Tim Rice commented. “I knew we would be competitive, I just didn’t know we would be 16-5 right now. Everybody has accepted their role and everyone has played together.”
“Coming into this season, we lost those 38 points (per game average) from Danay (Fothergill) and Jessica (Peirce) and we didn’t know where we would be able to get those 38 points from,” Rice added. “Everyone on the team has picked their scoring averages up a little bit and we are scoring just as much as we did last year.”
The scoring improvement was never more evident than last night as three Lady Warriors hit double figures in scoring, including freshman Brittany Combs — who broke out with a 16-point performance.
“Brittany (Combs) had a big game against North Laurel and now another strong showing against West Jessamine,” Rice said. “Brittany can score, but she needs to look to shoot more. In most games, she is putting up maybe 3 shots, but we need her to put up more like 8 or 9 shots. When she has a big game shooting, it makes a big difference in our offense.”
Freshman Adison Corder scored a team-high 19 points — keeping a status quo on her 18.7 season scoring average — and eighth-grader Samantha Fitzgerald scored 12 points. Freshman Destiny Molden scored 6 points and senior Hannah Grant added 5 points. Fitzgerald and Grant both had 8 rebounds apiece.
“It seems like we have a different person step up every night, and that is what we have to have with the type of team we got this year,” Rice said. “We don’t have one big star player, but we have to play as a team to be successful. Last night, we made a lot of big shots — Adison Corder made 5 threes and Brittany Combs made 4 threes.”
Southwestern (16-5) will be back in action tonight at the Wigwam to host Garrard County (15-7). On Friday, Feb. 3, the Lady Warriors will travel cross-town to the Briar Patch to take on Somerset High School (10-11).

Trevor Herd signs with Union College
During his four years on the Somerset High School soccer team, Trevor Herd scored 50 goals and notched 13 assists. During his junior year, Herd scored 27 goals in 21 matches, which earned him Commonwealth Journal's All-County Player of the Year. Despite being riddled by injuries during his senior campaign, Herd still scored nine goals, had five assists, and was named to both All-District and All-Tournament Teams throughout his career.
And while Herd’s injuries were serious enough to end his future as a soccer player at the next level, the talented Somerset High School senior set his mind on continuing to play and recently signed to play at the next level for Union College. -
