Somerset —
Southwestern had two goals heading into Thursday night’s contest against North Laurel at The Wigwam.
Goal number one for the Lady Warriors was to, of course, come home with a victory.
The second goal on the list for Southwestern was to make sure that freshman Adison Corder didn’t leave the gym without scoring at least 16 points.
Well, it was mission accomplished for the ‘Blue and Orange,’ as the Lady Warriors accomplished both of those goals.
Southwestern came away with a 70-43 victory over the Lady Jaguars, while Corder tallied a game-high 22 points, which was more than enough to allow the freshman to join the Lady Warriors’ 1,000-point club.
Coming into the contest, Corder needed 16 points to become the youngest boy or girl to join the milestone club at Southwestern. Corder got her 16th point of contest in the fourth quarter, making her the first-ever freshman player in school history to reach 1,000 points.
With 5:47 left in the contest, Corder went to the line for a pair of free-throws. The trip to the charity stripe turned out to be a memory that the freshman will remember for a lifetime. The freshman sunk the first one, which turned out to be point number 1,000 for her young, but already successful career.
After making the first charity toss, Corder sunk the second one just for kicks, giving Southwestern a 54-33 lead with just under six minutes left to play.
“(Adison) is the only freshman - boy or girls - to ever reach that plateau,” began Southwestern head coach Tim Rice. “I’m very happy for her and her family. She is a good girl and works hard all the time.”
“I’ve had a lot of girls reach 1,000 points since I’ve been here. Hopefully, this team can have several more reach that milestone.”
Midway through the opening quarter of action, Southwestern opened the flood gates early, as the Lady Warriors went on a 12-0 run to grab a 16-2 lead over the visiting Lady Jaguars.
Corder kicked off the run with a lay-up, while 8th-grader Samantha Fitzgerald hit a pair of free-throws to put Southwestern out front by six points at 8-2 with 3:23 remaining in the first period.
Freshman Destiny Molden and Corder each knocked down a pair of treys, allowing the Lady Warriors to grab a 14-2 advantage. Molden made the score 16-2 after hitting two free-throws.
At the end of the first frame, Southwestern had a 16-7 lead over North Laurel.
The Lady Warriors picked up right where they left off in the second frame, as Southwestern opened the quarter with a 9-0 spurt.
After a lay-up from Corder, freshman Brittany Combs nailed a trifecta and a lay-up to give Southwestern a 23-7 lead. Corder hit another lay-up to put Rice and crew ahead by 18 points.
Combs had a huge quarter for Southwestern, tallying 11 of her 17 points in the second period alone.
At the break, the Lady Jaguars trailed Southwestern by 18 points at 33-15.
“I thought offensively, we looked really good,” stated Rice, who saw his club move to 15-5 with the big victory over North Laurel. “North Laurel is down a little bit this year, but this is the type of game that if you don’t come out and take care of business, they will make a good ballgame out of it.”
“We played well and executed some things that we needed to work on,” continued the veteran Lady Warrior hoops coach. “Defensively, we had a couple of lapses, but we fixed that at halftime. I thought it was a good all-around team effort.”
For the Lady Jaguars, Sam Profitt and Kayla Bruner led the way, as both of them tallied 9 points each in the 27-point loss to Southwestern. Kendall Ellington pulled down a team-high 6 boards in the contest.
Corder, along with making her way into the 1,000-point club, led all scorers with a game-high 22 points. Combs, who hit a trio of 3-pointers in the game, had 17 points.
Fitzgerald, who finished with 11 points, joined Corder and Combs in double figures.
North Laurel, out of the 13th Region, couldn’t seem to get anything going all-game long, as the Lady Jaguars committed 19 turnovers on the night.
The Lady Warriors will return to action on Monday evening, as Rice and company will entertain 12th Region opponent West Jessamine at 7:30 p.m. at The Wigwam.

Trevor Herd signs with Union College
During his four years on the Somerset High School soccer team, Trevor Herd scored 50 goals and notched 13 assists. During his junior year, Herd scored 27 goals in 21 matches, which earned him Commonwealth Journal's All-County Player of the Year. Despite being riddled by injuries during his senior campaign, Herd still scored nine goals, had five assists, and was named to both All-District and All-Tournament Teams throughout his career.
And while Herd’s injuries were serious enough to end his future as a soccer player at the next level, the talented Somerset High School senior set his mind on continuing to play and recently signed to play at the next level for Union College. -
