If it talks like a candidate, glad-hands like a candidate, speaks with the fervor of a candidate, it probably is a candidate.
But Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes was coy when asked by a reporter is she is priming for a race for governor or as a possible Democratic candidate to challenge Republican Senator Mitch McConnell next year.
Grimes, following a speech Tuesday to the Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce, didn’t rule out either option. She didn’t confirm or deny.
“My focus is on being secretary of state,” she answered. However, she volunteered a comment that there is considerable support for her to enter the governor’s race or to oppose McConnell.
Grimes laughed at a reporter’s comment that she has one of the most active public relations staff in history. Several e-mails to the media each day charter her every move.
“We’re having a lot of fun,” she grinned.
Democrats were out in force to hear Grimes’ speech at the chamber membership meeting. She got more than one standing ovation; even Republicans stood and cheered.
Grimes is Kentucky’s 76th secretary of state and only current female constitutional officer. She claims a lifelong commitment to public service and, in particular, protecting the right to vote.
She grew up canvassing Kentucky’s precincts and counties to make sure all citizens had access to vote on Election Day. Additionally, she has served as a precinct officer for the 75th Legislative District and a member of the 2008 DNC Rules Committee.
Grimes tailored her chamber remarks to making it easier for businesses to operate in Kentucky and “ ... making sure Kentucky is moving in the right direction. She said she is working with members of the General Assembly advocating laws that support business growth.
As a business attorney, Grimes has assisted companies in creating jobs in the Commonwealth.
She encouraged chamber members and guests to be optimistic in their efforts to grow the community.
“Keep you eye on the donut and not on the hole,” She challenged.
