Hughes sentenced in rape case

Somerset —

A Pulaski County man appeared in court last month in connection with a June 2012 rape — and his alleged attempted escape from authorities during questioning.
Corey Walter Eugene Hughes, 23, of Burnside, appeared in Pulaski Circuit Court on Thursday, Dec. 20 and he was sentenced to five years in prison for second-degree rape and second-degree escape.
Hughes was arrested in June of last year after deputies with the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department responded to a residence on Lakeshore Drive in Burnside after they received a report that a 13-year-old girl had been raped by a 23-year-old male suspect.
That complaint was filed after the female’s mother allegedly caught Hughes and the victim. The mother then reportedly attacked Hughes with a coffee cup, causing lacerations to his head, according to the sheriff’s department.
Hughes was transported to the sheriff’s office, located in the old Pulaski County Courthouse, for questioning, but he allegedly fled from deputies on foot upon arriving at the courthouse.
He was found the next day by officers with the Somerset Police Department and sheriff’s deputies in the area of Colonial Village in Somerset, according to the sheriff’s department.
Hughes was initially charged with first-degree rape and second-degree escape. He was also placed on the sex offender registry for 20 years.
