Discarded tombstones used as Rocky Hollow Park filler

Somerset — Halloween is over, but visitors to the walking trail at Rocky Hollow Park are still seeing what could be interpreted as a spooky sight when they travel there.

Casual observers may notice broken tombstones piled into drainage ditches near the entrance to the trail.

Leftovers from a Halloween gag? No. But they’re not exactly “real” tombstones either.

Somerset Mayor Eddie Girdler says the city obtained “excess monument rocks” from a local monument company, and that those stones are an ideal size for filling the drainage ditch at Rocky Hollow.

Apparently, the tombstones are the monument company’s “rejects” — broken or damaged stones or ones with erroneous inscriptions. It is assumed they were never actually used in cemeteries.

Girdler hadn’t seen the stones as of yesterday afternoon, but when he was informed of their presence, he said he planned to find out why they were used.
