Family pet perishes in Eagle's Nest fire

Somerset —

No one was injured in a morning fire at a home in a subdivision off Ky. 39, but firefighters weren’t able to save a family pet that was in the home when the fire started. Emergency personnel rec-eived a report of a fire at a home on Heather’s Way in Eagles Nest, located off Ky. 39 around four miles north of Somerset, at approximately 9:30 a.m. Monday, according to Dabney Volunteer Fire Department Captain Rick Haynes. No one was home at the time of the incident, and a passerby reported the fire. Once there, firefighters discovered the blaze had started in the kitchen of the two-story home, owned by Mark Hamm, according to Haynes. “The fire was contained to the kitchen and partially to the dining room area,” Haynes said. Haynes said the home suffered significant smoke and heat damage, and he said a young dog was found on the second story in a crate. The animal could not be revived. The Somerset Fire Investigations unit was called to the scene of the fire after the blaze was contained because firefighters weren’t able to initially pinpoint the exact location of where the fire started. Firefighters remained on the scene for roughly three hours. Dabney was also assisted on the scene by the Science Hill Volunteer Fire Department.
