Arrests on charges of burglary have been frequent for the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department, as three men have been arrested in the last week for separate incidents.
On Monday, Jamie C. Brown, 35, of Ashcamp, Ky., was arrested on a Pulaski Circuit Court warrant on indictment and charged with third-degree burglary, theft by unlawful taking over $300, and being a persistent felony offender, second degree.
Brown turned himself in at the Pulaski County Sheriff’s department and posted bond in the Pulaski Circuit Court Clerk’s Office and was given a court date for a later appearance.
Last Thursday, Brian Hittle, 20, 4810 South U.S. 27, Somerset, was arrested Thursday on a Pulaski Circuit Court warrant on indictment and charged with first-degree burglary.
The investigation was conducted by detectives Bobby Jones and John Hutchinson into an August 2008 incident at a residence located on Old Waitsboro Road.
Hittle was lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center on a $20,000 cash or property bond.
Then on Wednesday, Thomas Duncan, 19, 546 Koger Circle, Somerset, was arrested on a Pulaski Circuit Court warrant on indictment. He was charged with first-degree burglary (forced entry into a residence), theft by unlawful taking with a firearm, first-degree burglary, and theft by unlawful taking over $300.
The case was investigated by detectives Bobby Jones and Jon Hutchinson of the Criminal Investigations Division of the sheriff’s department and occurred during the spring of 2008. The investigation revealed that Duncan had entered into a residence located on Loop no. 2, Ky. 90, on two occasions during this time period.
Duncan was lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center on a $20,000 cash or property bond.
In other Sheriff’s Department activity:
• Melissa D. Huff, 30, of West Point, Ky., was arrested Wednesday on a Pulaski Circuit Court warrant on indictment on charges of flagrant non-support. She was indicted by a Pulaski Country Grand Jury during the November 2008 session.
Huff was lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center on a $9,649.29 cash only bond to be applied to child support.
• Eric L. Ping, 44, 90 Lost Lodge Road, was arrested Friday on a Pulaski Circuit Court warrant on indictment and charged with third-degree assault and second-degree trafficking in a controlled substance.
Ping was indicted by a Pulaski County Grand Jury after an investigation conducted by the Lake Cumberland Area Drug Task Force in April 2007. The suspect allegedly caused to attempted to cause physical injury to a Task Force agent and possessed Ampthetamine with the intent to distribute or transfer the drug.
Ping was lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center on a $25,000 cash only bond.

Pulaski County is not at war. The booming you may hear at dusk is mock cannon fire to scare away birds.
Stuart Spillman, environmental director for the Lake Cumberland Health Department, said at least three cannons are on loan from the department to residents who want to scare away swarms of starlings and blackbirds settling in to roost.
He said a cannon is being used by a resident on Laura Lane off Ky. 39; another is in the Oak Hill Road area and a third is on Ashurst Street in the eastern part of Somerset.
Spillman said a timer on each cannon allows it to “fire” at whatever frequency is desired. The cannons must be used as the birds circle before going to roost. “After they settle in, nothing will chase them out,” Spillman said.
The Health Department doesn’t operate the cannons unless there is a specific complaint in an area where there are lots of birds, Spillman noted. He said so far this year the birds are not as bad as in the past. -
Boil water advisory is lifted countywide
The water controversy that Pulaski County has been boiling over — so to speak — for the last week is finally over.
At 10 minutes after noon Wednesday, the “boil water” advisory for the Western Pulaski Water District was lifted — almost a full week after the problems began around 1 p.m. last Thursday.
Prior to that, the Somerset Water Service — along with the other water providers in its system, including Science Hill Water, Southeastern Water, and Eubank Water — lifted their advisories, with Somerset on Saturday afternoon and the last, Southeastern, by Monday morning. Western Pulaski was the last in the system to complete sample testing for potential contaminants, due to not being able to access its Pikeville-based testing lab until Monday.
Somerset Mayor Eddie Girdler thanked the public for its patience and understanding during the duration of the boil water advisory — put in place to keep citizens from drinking water that could have been contaminated after an accident last Thursday at the water plant site — and also thanked all the city employees for their hard work during this time.
“The boil water advisory went about as well as would be expected,” said Girdler.

Newspaper veteran name Publisher of Commonwealth Journal
SOMERSET — A fourth generation newspaperman has been named publisher of the Commonwealth Journal.
Rob McCullough, 50, who started working in a newspaper mailroom when he was 15, officially assumes his duties today. He succeeds Jack McNeely who has accepted a position with the Daily Mountain Eagle in Jasper, Alabama.
