Calhoun named president of car show organizers

A local building contractor will head up the Somernites Cruise for 2008.

Randy Calhoun, one of the founding members of Somernites, was elected president of the group during the annual election of officers meeting.

Calhoun has served as either secretary-treasurer or vice president of the organization since its inception.

Jim Harris was elected vice president and Gib Gosser will serve as secretary-treasurer for the coming year.

Newly elected board members include Ron Tillery, Dr. Carter Blevins, and immediate past president Keith Floyd.

Continuing on the board are Bobby Burns, Gary Baker, and Joel Zimmer. Calhoun, Harris, Gosser, Tillery, and Floyd are all charter members of the organization.

Approximately 40 other men and women make up the Somernites Management Team that stages the downtown car cruise event on the fourth Saturday of the month between April and October.

There is no charge to either the exhibitor of spectator.

Calhoun says the Cruise is coming off its biggest year in its seven-year history and the management team and the community will have to continue pulling together to make the event even more successful.

Calhoun also pledged to make the event more enjoyable for the dozens of volunteers who stage the monthly event. He says he’ll seek more community volunteers and look for ways to add fun to the workload.
