Ohio woman critical after boating accident

Somerset — An Ohio woman is listed in critical condition at a Lexington hospital four days after she was injured in a boating accident on Lake Cumberland.

A passenger on a 27-foot pontoon was seriously injured Saturday when she was struck by the boat’s propeller, said Capt. Tim Catron of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

The woman, identified as Lisa Terry of Kettering, Ohio, was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center. A helicopter landed around 9:15 p.m. at General Burnside Island State Park, a short distance away from the marina, and transported the injured woman to the Lexington hospital.

Based on preliminary information from witnesses at the scene when Terry was brought to the marina for medical attention, she fell overboard and was cut by the blades of a propeller.

Terry is listed in critical condition, a UK hospital spokesperson said Wednesday.

Catron said Terry was attempting to check the boat’s navigational lights, which were malfunctioning, when she apparently fell into the water.

The investigating officer is trying to piece together details leading up to the accident. People involved have not been cooperative, and most of the initial information has come from independent witnesses.

Several of the passengers got off the boat and stayed with Terry until emergency personnel arrived at the marina. Catron said the boat was taken to another location and cleaned by the time he inspected the watercraft the next day.

The accident remains under investigation. Foul play is not suspected.
