Sponsors sought for 2010 Lake Cumberland Grand Prix

Sponsors—large or small—are needed to step up and become part of one of the most exciting events of this summer’s season—the Lake Cumberland Grand Prix OSS (Offshore Super Series) powerboat race planned for June 4-6 at Waitsboro Recreation Area in Somerset and Pulaski County.

The race event is seeking sponsors at all sponsorship levels willing to help support the race financially, and, as a result, receive prime marketing exposure at a premier Lake Cumberland event before several thousand excited racing fans.

“This is an exciting opportunity for local businesses,” Larry Combs, race coordinator and director of business services for The Center for Rural Development, home of Race Village, said. “The OSS race coming to Somerset is like having NASCAR in town, only with water.”

A variety of sponsorship packages are available to choose from, including basic packages ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 sponsorships to premium packages that include three levels of sponsorships from gold ($5,000), platinum ($10,000) to diamond ($25,000).

“We also have Lake Cumberland Grand Prix Finish Line Friends for those businesses who want to donate goods or services for the race,” Combs said.

The Commonwealth Journal will also publish the “Official” Lake Cumberland Grand Prix race program. The tabloid program will be printed on special bright-white newsprint. The program will be delivered in the Sunday, May 30th, edition of the Commonwealth Journal. An additional 10,000 copies will be distributed during the three-day racing event. All gold, platinum and diamond race sponsors will receive advertising space in the program.

Additional advertising space is available in the race program and all participating businesses will be considered “Finish Line Friends”. Additional advertising space in the race program is available at the following rates: Back Page $800, Center Spread $900, Front Page strip $400, Half Page $275, Quarter Page $159, and Eighth Page $109. “Becoming a sponsor for the OSS Race not only shows support for the event, but it shows support for Lake Cumberland and the surrounding counties,” added Jeff Crowe, president and CEO of TOUR SEKY, and race sponsorship coordinator. “We are asking all businesses in the Lake Cumberland Region to get on board and show their support for the community.”

This year’s race, to be held at Waitsboro Recreation Area—located off U.S. 27 in Somerset just past Traffic Light 29—will feature a challenging nine-turn course and more than 20 boats capable of reaching speeds of up to 200 miles per hour.

Devon Allman, son of iconic singer/songwriter Gregg Allman of the legendary Allman Brothers Band, will help kick off race weekend on June 4 with his band, the Honeytribe, performing a free southern rock and blues concert at 7 p.m. at The Center’s Race Village.

In addition to the opening night concert, Friday’s activities for Race Village will also feature a “Parade of Boats” from 6-7 p.m., during which the race teams and their powerboats will be on full display as they head north up U.S. 27 in Somerset from The Center and back again.

Qualifying heats and Pro-Am racing will take place on June 5 with the official start of the race beginning at noon on June 6. The closing ceremonies and awards presentation at the conclusion of the final races will be held at Race Village.

    Pulaski County is not at war. The booming you may hear at dusk is mock cannon fire to scare away birds.
    Stuart Spillman, environmental director for the Lake Cumberland Health Department, said at least three cannons are on loan from the department to residents who want to scare away swarms of starlings and blackbirds settling in to roost.
    He said a cannon is being used by a resident on Laura Lane off Ky. 39; another is in the Oak Hill Road area and a third is on Ashurst Street in the eastern part of Somerset.
    Spillman said a timer on each cannon allows it to “fire” at whatever frequency is desired. The cannons must be used as the birds circle before going to roost. “After they settle in, nothing will chase them out,” Spillman said.
    The Health Department doesn’t operate the cannons unless there is a specific complaint in an area where there are lots of birds, Spillman noted. He said so far this year the birds are not as bad as in the past.

  • Boil water advisory is lifted countywide

    The water controversy that Pulaski County has been boiling over — so to speak — for the last week is finally over.
    At 10 minutes after noon Wednesday, the “boil water” advisory for the Western Pulaski Water District was lifted — almost a full week after the problems began around 1 p.m. last Thursday.
    Prior to that, the Somerset Water Service — along with the other water providers in its system, including Science Hill Water, Southeastern Water, and Eubank Water — lifted their advisories, with Somerset on Saturday afternoon and the last, Southeastern, by Monday morning. Western Pulaski was the last in the system to complete sample testing for potential contaminants, due to not being able to access its Pikeville-based testing lab until Monday.
    Somerset Mayor Eddie Girdler thanked the public for its patience and understanding during the duration of the boil water advisory — put in place to keep citizens from drinking water that could have been contaminated after an accident last Thursday at the water plant site — and also thanked all the city employees for their hard work during this time.
    “The boil water advisory went about as well as would be expected,” said Girdler.
