Several children from northern Pulaski County were treated to a Christmas surprise Tues-day.
Six Science Hill School students, along with several parents and Science Hill School Superintendent Rick Walker arrived at the Pulaski County Recycling Center Tuesday morning to find brand new bicycles waiting for them.
“It was terrific,” Walker said about the way the children, ages three to nine, reacted to the bikes.
Solid Waste Coordinator Gerald Hines said this makes the second year the Solid Waste Board, together with Waste Connections, has given away bikes to county children.
Hines said through a coordinated effort with whichever school he contacts for the year — last year, Burnside Elementary children received the bikes — it’s determined which “first-time bike owners” will receive the special gifts.
“You’re doing something for some folks that might not have that opportunity,” Hines said.
Walker said Hines contacted him just last week to ask that he find 12 children, six boys and six girls, to receive the bikes. After that was done, Walker said he got permission from six of the children’s parents for a “field trip” to the recycling center, where the children would be surprised with the bikes.
“Everyone was thrilled to death,” Walker said. “Most of them did not know what they were there for.”
Walker said those six children who didn’t make the field trip were delighted to find out about the bikes, along with their parents.
“The parents and the kids were just tickled to death,” Walker said.
Hines said any school interested in coordinating with Solid Waste and Waste Connections for next year’s giveaway can contact him at 677-0320.
