The City of Burnside has a new police officer.
Matthew L. Brown was officially sworn into duty by Mayor Chuck Fourman Monday at the November council meeting.
Brown, a Burnside native, honorably served in the U.S. Army for five years as a military police officer. While enlisted, Brown completed two tours in Iraq, receiving three army commendation medals for his actions while deployed there.
Brown is finishing his term of services enlisted with the Army Reserves. Brown is a certified instructor in the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program, and as such is expected to be instrumental in establishing a successful DARE program in local schools.
The newest officer in “the only town in Lake Cumberland” has received training in emergency vehicle operation, hand-ling domestic violence incident, radar, and numerous other aspects of law enforcement. He is currently serving as an advisor for the Somerset Police Explorers, and was involved in the program for five years as a cadet.
Brown will attend the Department of Criminal Justice Basic Training Academy in December, and after successfully completing the depart-ment’s field training officer program, will begin patrolling in Burnside.
