Somerset — The fatal shooting of a Science Hill man earlier this week has been determined to be accidental, according to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department.
Pulaski Chief Deputy Coroner Jim McWhorter stated Thursday that the coroner’s office will be ruling the death of Steven W. Quaid, 62, to be accidental in nature.
“This incident is an unfortunate accident,” said Pulaski County Sheriff Todd Wood. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Quaid family.”
On Tuesday afternoon, sheriff’s units responded to a shooting that occurred at Quaid’s residence at 5417 West Ky. 635 in Science Hill. The investigation at the scene revealed that Quaid had been shot one time in the head, apparently with his own rifle.
He was discovered, having already been shot, when his wife went outside to check on him after he didn’t return to the house.
Quaid was treated at the scene and transported to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the coroner’s office.
An autopsy was completed on Thursday at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort. The findings are consistent with the investigation, which indicated that Quad had gone outside to shoot at a stray dog that was chasing some of his livestock.
As Quiad stepped off the porch of his home, he fell and the weapon accidentally discharged, striking him in the head.
The investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department and the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office.
