A man pleaded guilty this week to murder in the shooting death of his wife — and to charges connected with a short stand-off he had with responding police officers at the couple’s home.
Timmy K. Hislope, 52, appeared in Pulaski Circuit Court Thursday and pleaded guilty to one count of murder and three counts of wanton endangerment, according to Pulaski Commonwealth’s Attorney Eddy F. Montgomery.
Hislope was arrested Aug. 9 after he shot and killed his wife, Mary Gilmore, or Mary Hislope, 44, at their home on Okalona Road in Nancy with police officers just outside the residence.
Hislope was initially indicted in September on one count of murder, one count of kidnapping and three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment.
A detailed report of the incident given by Kentucky State Police Detective Douglas Boyd stated that KSP Troopers Chris Ison and William Cowan and Pulaski County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Molen responded to a report of a disturbance at the Hislopes’ home on Aug. 9.
“Upon arrival Trooper Ison and (Trooper) Cowan approached the front door of the residence and could hear a female voice yelling for help,” Boyd stated in court documents. “As the door opened the (t)roopers observed a female, later identified as Mary Hislope screaming for help with the defendant (Hislope) standing behind her holding a long barreled firearm.
“The door slammed shut and two gun shots were heard,” Boyd’s statement continues. “The law enforcement officers retreated to a position of cover.”
Hislope soon exited the home and raised a shotgun and pointed it in the officers’ direction. Both Ison and Cowan fired their guns at Hislope but didn’t strike him. Hislope then ran back into the residence and exited again, this time pointing the gun at Molen.
Boyd said in his report that Hislope chased Molen and pointed the shotgun at the deputy several times. Ison then shot Hislope, and Hislope was airlifted to the UK Medical Center for treatment.
The officers entered the home to check on Mary Gilmore after her husband was shot, and Boyd stated in the court document that she was found dead in the residence with two gunshot wounds to her body.
Court documents suggest Timmy Hislope had been arrested multiple times in the past for incidents of alleged domestic violence involving Gilmore, in 2007 and 2010, and another woman in 1998.
Montgomery recommended 20 years for the murder charge and five years for each wanton endangerment charge, which would run concurrently (at the same time) for a total of 20 years. Hislope would be eligible for parole after 85 percent of his sentence is served, which is 17 years.
Montgomery said Hislope, through his attorney, Andrea Simpson, apologized to Gilmore’s family about what he’d done.
Montgomery also said her family was in the courtroom for the hearing.
“They were all in agreement with the plea,” Montgomery said.
Montgomery said sentencing is set for January 24, 2013.
