Somerset —
A man who pleaded guilty to several charges connected with a deadly June 2009 accident was sentenced in court this week.
Jose Santiago Cuevas, 29, of Somerset, appeared before Pulaski County Circuit Judge Jeffrey T. Burdette Thursday for sentencing after he pleaded guilty in April to manslaughter, criminal mischief and wanton endangerment charges.
Cuevas was arrested after he was involved in a June 21 two-vehicle accident on Ky. 39 that left Sheila R. Lovell, 38, of Mt. Vernon dead.
According to information received through preliminary hearings, Cuevas lost control of the 1997 Ford pick-up truck he was operating approximately 12 miles north of Somerset on Ky. 39 and struck Lovell’s, vehicle. Lovell, who was ejected from the 2007 Chevrolet she was driving, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office.
Cuevas was injured in the crash and had to be extricated from his vehicle before he was taken to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital for treatment.
Cuevas was indicted in August 2009 on one count of wanton murder, one count of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, third offense, and no operator’s license in connection with the June 21, 2009 accident.
In April, Cuevas struck a plea agreement with prosecutors, pleading guilty to second-degree manslaughter, first-degree criminal mischief and first-degree wanton endangerment.
On Thursday Cuevas was sentenced to 10 years in prison on the manslaughter charge, five years in prison on the criminal mischief charge and five years in prison on the first-degree wanton endangerment charge.
Those will run consecutively, or one after another, for a total of 20 years in prison.
