Dear Editor:
I read with interest the story in the Commonwealth Journal on Wednesday, Nov. 11, about the Pulaski County Fiscal Court "reluctantly" settling the lawsuit with former county employees.
The story gave the false impression that the fiscal court was forced to accept the tentative settlement between the county's insurance company and the employees.
The truth is the Pulaski County Fiscal Court could have rejected the settlement.
However, if they did reject it, then the insurance company would no longer have been responsible for any damages above the amount they had agreed to settle for.
Thus, I think, what really have here is a group of morally-challenged magistrates in need of a spine transplant and a county attorney giving them political cover.
If they really believed that they had done nothing wrong, they could have rejected the insurance company deal and gone to court with no insurance.
Of course, if they had lost the case, then the taxpayers would have been on the hook to pay what might have been a much larger fine.
So, I think, all the posturing by the magistrates by passing of a motion to disagree with the insurance company settlement was just a little dog and pony show for the benefit of the voting public.
If this little drama were a movie, I would give it no stars.
