Der Editor:
I was recently in Somerset visiting with my parentsd, and was near giddy to pick up the paper and read Tim Hyden’s excellent article on Carla Coffey’s nomination to the SHS Hall of Fame. What an uplifting story of success! In a time when good news sometimes seems scarce, Carla’s story reminds us of why we love America.
Carla’s accomplishments exemplify ambitious effort, pioneering progress, and relentless determination. Most of all, the story in the Sunday, June 27, Commonwealth Journal de-scribes a woman whose leadership by example motivates and encourages young female athletes of all ethnic backgrounds to shoot for the highest heights, reach for the stars and act like a lady when you get there!
I was in Junior. High at Central when Carla and Betty and Bonita and Glenda and Doretha were starting that track team. Their confidence, swagger and physical fitness awed me. I thought they were the next best thing to the Supremes!
Appreciation and admiration should also be extended to both the late Shirley Smith and to Joan Spurlock for their dedication and evolutionary contributions to Girls’ Sports at SHS.
Leaving a legacy is a good thing.
All the Best,
