Community needs drug task force

CNHI

Somerset — Dear Editor:

My name is Deneen Wittlinger and I am a mother of a ten year old and an eight year old who attend Pulaski Elementary School.  I am an active citizen who is a volunteer for my children’s school, for their soccer program, and also very active in my church.  Although I live in the county; I work in the city, shop in the city, and feel very much a part of the community of Somerset.

I was very concerned to learn of the Mayor disbanding the Lake Cumberland Drug Task Force.  Drugs are a problem in Pulaski County.  For me to be aware of drugs in our community is bothersome, since I certainly do not run in the same circles where drugs are used.  In my opinion, anything we can do to help the war on drugs should be done.  I realize the police forces are doing their jobs well, in effort to stop drug manufacturing and trafficking in our area, but why wouldn’t we want every possible resource to fight drugs?  Especially a resource that is designed specifically to fight drugs.

I may not understand all the politics involved in this decision, I am just a concerned mother who is troubled with thoughts of her children living in a community who did not do everything in their power to fight the war on drugs.  The fact that the Mayor is entertaining the notion of terminating the Lake Cumberland Drug Task Force is foolish.  I would like it to be explained to me what is the reason for possibly getting rid of such an effective organization.  If it is decided to terminate the Task Force’s stay in Somerset, I hope the decision is not politically motivated and made with much deliberation.  Our children’s lives are at stake.

Thank you for your time.
