Somerset —
Today, October 31, 2010, marks an achievement few of us will ever realize.
Maggie Lovell Molen, with family and friends, celebrates her 107th birthday.
Born and raised in a rural area of Sloan Hollow near Meadow Creek in Wayne County, she has watched history being created. She remembers the first time she rode in a car, when electricity came into her home and learning all about the new gadget called a telephone.
Her life has spanned most of the 20th century, and she has literally watched the world change right before her.
Mrs. Molen is the eldest daughter of 10 children, learning early in life what hard work was all about. She was the fourth child of Robert F. Lovell and Mattie L. East Lovell.
Mrs. Molen moved from Meadow Creek to Frazer in August 1922 when she married Herstel Molen. To this union five children were born: Fred Norman Molen (deceased), Edward Howard “Johnny” Molen (deceased), Margaret Molen York of Monticello, Ky., Ray Samuel Molen of Harrodsburg, Ky., and Marilyn Molen Helton of Somerset, Ky.
They remained devoted to each other until Herstel’s death in 1986.
There is speculation that she may be the only widow still drawing a World War I pension from her husband’s service to our country.
Mrs. Molen cherishes her family greatly. She has worn many “titles’ being a daughter, sister, wife, mother, granny, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, mentor and friend. Despite all the new conveniences invented during her life, she has always felt that time with her family is the most important.
Her family has grown over the years as she is blessed with 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
She has imprinted her values and beliefs on each generation ensuring her legacy will live for many years.
One privilege Mrs. Molen takes seriously is her right to vote. Just as she has for the past 50-plus years, Mrs. Molen voted by absentee ballot last week. She is a lifelong Democrat and of the Methodist faith. She belongs to the Meadow Creek Methodist Church but attended Tuttle Chapel Methodist Church in Frazer when able to do so.
Mrs. Molen will tell you quickly that trusting in the Lord has sustained her during the trials and joys of her life’s journey.
If only we could capture her wisdom, what a history book we would write ...
Happy Birthday,
Mrs. Molen!
