Downtown road work running ahead of schedule
By BILL MARDIS, Editor Emeritus Commonwealth Journal The Commonwealth Journal Fri Feb 03, 2012, 07:00 AM EST
The streetscape project on North Main Street in downtown Somerset is running slightly ahead of schedule and may be completed before the target date of early summer.
“It’s raining a lot but they just keep on working,” said city engineer Alex Godsey. Motorists in downtown Somerset for the past several weeks have been squeezing around orange barrels and dodging closed streets to facilitate the construction.
“North Main Street from Columbia Street to Oak Street will look like South Main Street with period lighting and underground utilities,” said Godsey. The surface of North Main Street won’t have to be disturbed because electrical crossings were installed before the blacktopping project last year, he noted.
“We’re replacing dilapidated sections of sidewalk and fixing trip hazards,” said Godsey. “A new curb is being created,” he added.
Transformers and utilities boxes have been moved to Vine and Maple streets. There will be no transformers on North Main Street. Buildings on North Main Street will be served from the rear, Godsey said.
The North Main Street improvements are being financed with the last $400,000 of a $1 million grant for the total streetscape project, Godsey said.
