McGaha didn’t approve farewell letter
Two weeks ago, State Sen. Vernie McGaha bid farewell to local citizens in a letter to the editor after redistricting left him with Bullitt and Nelson counties — and without any portion of Pulaski.
Problem is, McGaha says he didn’t write the letter — nor did he OK it before it was sent to newspapers across his district.
McGaha sent a revised letter on Friday.
“The letter sent (on Jan. 20) came from the Senate staff,” McGaha said yesterday from his home in Russell Springs. “Normally some things are sent to us for approval. But this letter was sent to media outlets without my approval.”
Both letters were sent from the e-mail of Iris Wilbur, a staffer for the Kentucky Senate Majority.
“Iris is a new employee and I do have to cover her somewhat ... this was all happening just as my father passed away,” McGaha said. “Perhaps it was an oversight. But I didn’t see that first letter until it appeared in the newspapers.”
When asked directly what he would have changed about the first letter, he said with a chuckle, “Well, you can read the new one and see.”
David Williams, the Senate Majority President, now represents Pulaski County. The initial letter sent by Wilbur — without McGaha’s consent — said Williams was McGaha’s “good friend.”
“ ... You will now be represented by Senator David L. Williams, President of the Kentucky Senate (R-Burkesville) of the 16th Senate District, along with Clinton, Cumberland, Russell, and Wayne counties,” the first letter read. “My good friend looks forward to serving the needs of Pulaski County. Although I am sad to no longer represent you, I leave you with the good leadership of a good man. We will work together to ensure a smooth transition and I will help him become familiar with the local issues.”
Below is the text of McGaha’s letter that was sent by him and approved.
“Two weeks ago there was a letter to the editor with my name attached. I did not send the letter and it was done without my approval. So now let me convey my message to the citizens of Pulaski County.
It has been an honor to represent the best senatorial district in Kentucky for the past 15 years. I have endeavored to communicate with you, assist with your problems, and represent you with my vote in an honest and open manner.
Although redistricting has placed me elsewhere for my final year, I will continue to advocate for your concerns and want you to feel free to contact me. I am not seeking reelection for personal reasons. Redistricting or political aspects had nothing to do with my decision.
You are now represented by Senator David Williams, who I am sure will represent you well. Please let him know your concerns as you have me.
May God bless all of you and thank you for giving me the distinct honor of serving you in the Kentucky State Senate.
Sincerely,
Vernie McGaha”
